Description
This is an original WWI U.S. Army Signal Corps Type DR-2 aeroplane radio antenna reel with instructions. It was produced on April 4, 1918, by L.S. Brach Manufacturing Co. of Newark, New Jersey, and is marked "Order No. 42291". This antenna reel would have been used with the BC-15A and SCR-65A radio sets aboard the De Havilland DH-4 and the Curtiss JN-4 aircrafts. When in flight, this reel allowed the radio antenna to be extended, trailing behind the plane some 20 feet or more. This is a very uncommon find, few of which are known to exist to this day. Interestingly, one example was donated in 2010 to the National World War I Museum and Memorial of Kansas City, Missouri.
Provenance
Personal Collection of Chelius Carter
Condition Report
This antenna reel is in good, used condition and the instructions still remain legible.
