Description
This is an original and somewhat uncommon WWII U.S. Women's Army Corps (WAC) enlisted woman's Hobby Hat, named after the organization's director, Oveta Culp Hobby. The interior is twice marked with the laundry number of its original owner, "C-0197". A search of the National Archives produces two possible matches: Alice M. Cornelius, A-310197, and Lorraine Cote, A-100197. Unfortunately, without additional information, determining an exact match may prove unlikely. It is constructed of a summer weight khaki cotton. The front is decorated with a brass enlisted woman's device. Its interior is tagged size 22 1/2; however, no manufacturer's marking could be located.
Provenance
In July of 2025, Gustafson's acquired the inventory of Circa1941. This piece was among those acquisitions.
Condition Report
This cap is in good condition; however, the plastic headliner exhibits some cracking.
