Description
This original WWII U.S. M-1 helmet liner was produced by St. Clair Rubber Company of Marysville, Michigan. It features non-painted steel A-washers and a transitional OD#3 (khaki) suspension with snaps designed to accommodate the rayon headband. These features approximately date the liner's production to late-1942. Inscribed on the suspension is the original owner's laundry number, "J-7250". A search of the National Archives unfortunately reveals too many results to be conclusive. The suspension comes complete with its original J.P. Smith Shoe Co. headband, Johnson & Johnson neckband, and damaged leather chinstrap. The liner's exterior retains its original olive drab factory finish. Adhered to its top is an old "$1.00" price sticker - likely applied by an Army surplus store.
Provenance
Private Collection, Woodridge, Illinois
