Description

This is an original and exceedingly rare Civil War Union Army M1860 light cavalry saber by J.B. Allere of Chicago, Illinois. One example was sold at Heritage Auctions in 2008 and was described at the time as being "without a doubt, the rarest of the M1860 light cavalry sabers", with "less than ten specimens extant". The curved, 35-inch blade is marked on the ricasso "J.B.A.", and on the opposite side is an "M". The brass pommel cap is marked "A.G.M.", denoting inspection by Alfred G. Manning who inspected sabers at J.B. Allere exclusively in 1863. The steel scabbard measures approximately 36.25 inches in length. It retains both of its original mounting rings. We could not locate any markings on the scabbard, as is typical for this producer. With the saber secured in the scabbard, it measures approximately 42 inches in overall length.

Condition Report

Good

Excellent

For being well over 150 years old, this saber is in good, used condition. The markings are legible, and the brass hilt is undamaged and nicely patinated. The leather grip wrapping and twisted brass wire are intact and stable. The leather spacer also remains present. The blade does not appear to have been sharpened and is free of any major nicks; however, both it and the scabbard show some signs of rust throughout.
