Description
This is an original 1930s German commercially produced M18 style helmet, used by the Allgemeine-SS prior to the development of the new M35 helmet. The helmet's front visor features a downward "dip", causing collectors to dub these the "droop bill". The steel shell lacks factory, size, and lot number stampings; however, it has been measured and is a confirmed size 66. It showcases an original black parade finish, devoid of decals, as these were issued prior to the development of ᛋᛋ helmet insignia. That said, painted in the helmet's interior dome is an original ᛋᛋ marking. The interior retains its original three-pad leather liner, drawstring, and integrated chinstrap system. One of the leather liner pads exhibits a faint ink stamp, "SS Sturm, SS-Standarte", while the underside of another liner pad is inscribed with the original owner's initials, "PH". Interestingly, the helmet appears to have been repainted without removing the liner, as some paint was applied to its outer edge. The pop rivets securing the liner are original and show no signs of tampering; however, only the rear rivet remains secured to the liner.
Provenance
In July of 2025, Gustafson's acquired the inventory of Circa1941. This piece was among those acquisitions. Prior to Circa1941's possession, this helmet was sold at Ratisbon's in June of 2018.
Condition Report
This helmet is in fair, well used condition. The leather components and drawstring are still present but show signs of age and damage.
