Description
This original pre-WWII German M35 helmet was used by General Francisco Franco's Nationalist forces during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). The exterior features a light green field repaint, while the interior dome still exhibits its original Luftwaffe feldblau paint. The Condor Legion consisted of Luftwaffe forces sent to serve the Nationalist cause in Spain. In all, approximately 19,000 Germans fought during the Spanish Civil War, culminating in victory for the Nationalists. The front of the helmet was twice punctured to accommodate the now-missing regulatory eagle badge of the Spanish Army. The helmet does not exhibit factory, size, and lot number stampings - a common occurrence on Condor Legion helmets manufactured by the Eisenhüttenwerke, Thale factory. The helmet has been measured and is a confirmed size 62. The interior retains its original leather liner, drawstring, and chinstrap. The chinstrap exhibits an aluminum buckle. Interestingly, both the non-reinforced aluminum M1931 liner band and leather chinstrap are of German origin, while the leather lining is actually from an Adrian helmet. The helmet's split pins and washers are all original and show no signs of tampering.
Provenance
In July of 2025, Gustafson's acquired the inventory of Circa1941. This piece was among those acquisitions.
