Description

This is an original WWI U.S. M1917 helmet that was converted to an M1917A1 "Kelly" during a reconditioning process that first began in 1936, prior to McCord Radiator & Manufacturing Co.'s new production line of M1917A1 helmets in 1941. This particular example's lot number of "_79" is partially concealed beneath its field repaint; however, we can be certain it is of WWI U.S. manufacture given the overlapping brim and domed rivet heads. The helmet retains its original olive drab field repaint and sand texture. Its original leather liner and OD#3 (khaki) chinstraps are still present. The chinstraps exhibit the early cast brass buckle and box stitching, while the liner retains its original, but torn, leather drawstring and crown pad. The leather is inscribed with the original owner's rank and initials, "CPL RMG", and a headquarters marking, "W.H., HQ Co."
