Description
This is an original WWI U.S. M1917 helmet that was converted to an M1917A1 "Kelly" during a reconditioning process that first began in 1936, prior to McCord Radiator & Manufacturing Co.'s new production line of M1917A1 helmets in 1941. The helmet's exterior features an original and very unique camouflage pattern consisting of white polka dots on a black base. The helmet's lot number has been partially concealed beneath its camouflage paint; however, the still-visible "ZC" stamping denotes WWI production by the Columbian Enameling and Stamping Company of Terre Haute, Indiana. Its original leather liner and OD#3 (khaki) chinstraps are still present; however, the former is damaged, and its crown pad is missing. The chinstraps exhibit the early cast-brass buckle and box stitching, while the liner retains its original leather drawstring.
Provenance
In July of 2025, Gustafson's acquired the inventory of Circa1941. This piece was among those acquisitions.
Condition Report
This helmet set is in good, used condition. The steel shell exhibits some surface rust throughout, and its internal components are well worn.
