Description
This original WWI Austrian M17 helmet shell has a very impressive Buntfarbenanstrich (colored paint) camouflage scheme, consisting of ochre, green and rust-brown tones, separated by black borders. Additionally, the top of the helmet features an original hand painted Iron Cross insignia. Helmets in this configuration were often painted by enterprising individuals in France following the Armistice and sold as souvenirs to American soldiers before returning to the United States. Famously, a 17-year-old Red Cross volunteer by the name of Walt Disney was one such painter of these helmets. Unlike their German counterparts, Austrian helmets often left the factory without manufacturer's and size markings. We could not locate any markings on this example; however, the helmet has been measured and is a confirmed size 64. It comes with its three original split pins still intact. The split pins exhibit the same original camouflage finish found on the helmet, showcasing their long history together as a set.
Provenance
Private Collection, Bethpage, New York
Condition Report
