Description
This is an original WWI British Mark I "Brodie" helmet. It retains its original brush-applied apple green factory finish. The helmet's interior brim is marked "HV 38", denoting production by William Hutton & Sons Ltd. of Sheffield, England, with steel provided by Vickers Limited, also of Sheffield. Its original oil cloth liner is still present; however, its leather chinstrap has unfortunately torn near the chinstrap loops, which are secured by split rivets. A rubber ring is present in the crown's interior. These were introduced in mid-1917 to provide an additional buffer between the wearer’s head and the top of the helmet.
Asbestos Disclosure
The white substance upon which the rubber ring is resting is chrysotile or white asbestos and caution should be expressed when handling the helmet. Prior to purchasing, buyers should familiarize themselves with the potential health risks associated with collecting WWI Allied helmets.
Provenance
Personal Collection of Chelius Carter
Condition Report
For being well over 100 years old, this helmet is in fair condition. The interior's leather components show signs of damage and deterioration.
