Description
This is an original WWI Imperial German Army M17 helmet liner. It was recovered from a size 66 helmet shell manufactured by Eisenhüttenwerke, Thale. M17 helmet shells are identical to their M16 predecessors. The distinction was created among collectors, and it relates to the type of liner seen inside - helmets with leather liner bands are referred to as the M16 and those with steel bands, the M17. As such, this liner is an ideal candidate for the vast majority of stahlhelms. A close inspection of your helmet shell may indicate which liner it once had, as the M17's steel liner band may have left rust residue on its interior circumference.
Provenance
Private Collection, Dallas, Texas
Condition Report
For being well over 100 years old, this helmet liner is in good, used condition. The liner pads show damage, but all three are still present.
