Description
This is an original, and rather large WWI Imperial German brass 21cm Mörser Model 1910 artillery shell that was modified, likely at war's end, to serve as a champagne bucket with the addition of originally two decorative elephant's trunk handles. The shell's bottom is marked "POLTE, OCT 1917, MAGDEBURG", which denotes October 1917 production by Polte Armaturen- und Maschinenfabrik OHG of Magdeburg, Germany. Beneath these markings is an inspection stamping of "SP406". It measures approximately 9 inches wide and 9 inches tall.
Provenance
Private Collection, Ledbetter, Texas
Condition Report
Unfortunately, this piece of trench art is missing one of its two decorative elephant's trunk handles and the brass has oxidized over time.
