Description
This original WWI U.S. Army M1917 small box respirator (SBR) gas mask bag is identified to 33rd Infantry Division bugler Walter A. Skelton, 1383249. View the Veteran's Information section for more details regarding Skelton's life and military service. The bag is constructed of OD#3 (khaki) webbing and is inscribed with Skelton's ID. Inside the bag is Skelton's original gas mask and filter, whose yellow paint indicates protective qualities against both gas and smoke. Also included is an instructions booklet, anti-dimming stick, and an unknown piece of leather which is stamped "7222". Lastly, stitched inside the bottom of the bag is a coiled piece of steel wire, upon which the filter rests.

For being well over 100 years old, this gas mask set is in good condition; however, the pieces do show signs of consistent wear.
Veteran's Information
On May 16, 1918, Walter A. Skelton of Newton, Illinois departed Hoboken, New Jersey aboard SS Agamemnon as an infantryman bugler in the United States National Guard's 130th Infantry Regiment, Company B. While in France, he served in the 33rd Infantry Division, as evident by the small cross insignia on the gas mask bag's front. At war's end, on May 11, 1919, Skelton departed Brest, France for Hoboken, New Jersey aboard USS Siboney. Made available to the new owner below are Skelton's wartime travel records.
