Description
This is an original WWI U.S. M1917 "Brodie" helmet of British manufacture. Before the U.S. began production of the M1917 helmet, it acquired from the British a supply of 400,000 Mark I helmets. This particular example's interior brim is marked "FS 56", denoting 1916-18 production by Thomas Firth & Sons Ltd. of Sheffield, England. The helmet retains its original sawdust textured olive drab factory finish. Its original oil cloth liner and leather chinstrap are still present, and the chinstrap loops are secured by split rivets.
Provenance
Private Collection, Dallas, Texas
Condition Report
For being well over 100 years old, this helmet is in fair condition. The factory finish is exceptional; however, the leather chinstrap is unfortunately torn, and the helmet's rim is dented.
