Description
This is an original WWI U.S. M1917 "Brodie" helmet. Its interior brim is marked with the lot number "ZA255". Unfortunately, this particular manufacturer has yet to be positively identified; however, we can be certain it is of U.S. production due to the domed rivets securing the chinstrap loops (British-made helmets utilized split pins). The helmet retains its original textured olive drab factory finish. Its original oil cloth liner and leather chinstrap are still present. Interestingly, it appears as though masking tape was used on the felt crown pad, perhaps to further insulate the wearer's head. The helmet is decorated with a rather unique camouflage net, consisting of two apparent pieces of 1/2" knotted material spliced together. While some burlap helmet covers were used during WWI, nets have yet to be documented. As such, we cannot state definitively when it was applied, however it certainly appears to have been on the helmet for quite some time.
Provenance
Private Collection, Adkins, Texas
Condition Report
For being well over 100 years old, this helmet is in good, used condition. The factory finish shows some minor surface rust throughout. Its leather chinstrap is intact; however, the oil cloth liner appears to have been resecured via grey thread. Its original instruction label is missing.
