Description
This is an original WWII German M1931 helmet liner. Interestingly, the leather's underside is marked size "57", but its zinc band is stamped size "56/64". This is because the factory workers would mark the leather material, prior to being sewn to size, with the largest size it could accommodate. Faintly inscribed on the leather is the original owner's name. The band showcases a "1940" production stamp by Schuberth Werk, K.-G. Braunschweig, making it an ideal candidate for an M40 helmet.
Provenance
Private Collection, Marysville, Washington
Condition Report
This helmet liner is in very good, used condition. The zinc band shows no signs of post-war paint applications. The leather has cracked somewhat near the wearer's forehead, however all of its tongues remain intact, as does its original drawstring.
