Description
This is an original and rather uncommon WWII German M35 single decal Kriegsmarine helmet. The inside brim is size stamped "SE64", along with the lot number of "4776", denoting 1940 production by the Sächsische Emaillier und Stanzwerke A.G., Lauter factory. Atop the exterior's original textured feldgrau finish appears to be an application of shellac - a common method of preservation in the immediate post-war years. The interior retains its original leather liner and chinstrap remnants. The liner shows evidence of the helmet being a KIA-recovery, as it was common for American servicemen to cut away blood-stained liners prior to sending helmets home as souvenirs. It features a reinforced aluminum liner band. The chinstrap exhibits a grey painted steel buckle and is marked "G. SCHIELE, LOBURG, 1940". The helmet's split pins and washers are all original and show no signs of tampering.
Provenance
Private Collection, Moosic, Pennsylvania
Condition Report
This helmet is in fair, combat-used condition. The gold Kriegsmarine decal is heavily worn and much of the helmet's liner is missing. The chinstrap is fully intact; however, it has dried with age. This helmet appears to have had another helmet stacked on top, which left a ring around the crown's circumference.
