Description
This is an original WWII German M38 Luftschutz gladiator helmet. The M38 differs from its successors in that it is constructed of three separate pieces of pressed aluminum. It retains its original feldblau factory finish and does not look to have ever had a Luftschutz decal applied to its front. The interior retains its original size 57 leather liner and Preßstoff chinstrap. One of the liner pads is faintly inscribed with what appears to be its original owner's name. The rear skirt is stamped "RL2-38/28", denoting production by Paul Diener, Metalldrückerei und Stanzerei of Dresden, Germany. Interestingly, members of the Luftschutz were required to purchase their own helmets upon joining the organization and its "Höchstpreis 8.00 RM" marking indicates members were not to be charged more than 8 Reichsmarks per helmet. The helmet's split pins and square cork spacers are all original and show no signs of tampering.
Provenance
Private Collection, Round Top, Texas
Condition Report
This helmet is in very good condition. Unfortunately, however, the chinstrap is torn, and the liner's drawstring is missing.
