Description
This is an original WWII German M40 reissued ex-single decal Heer helmet. The inside brim is size stamped "Q64", along with the lot number of "362", denoting 1941 production by the F. W. Quist, Esslingen factory. In the crevices of its original feldgrau repaint are remnants of an original whitewash winter camouflage. Beneath the repaint, on the wearer's left side is an apparent decal. Of the three examples recorded in Brian Ice's German Helmet Lot Numbers 1935-1945 that share this same model, manufacturer, size, and lot number, all three are single decal Heers. The interior retains its original, albeit damaged, leather liner. Just next to the lot number is the overpainted and chipped surname of its original owner, "Heinso[...]", which most likely read "Heinsohn" originally. A search of the Volksbund Grave Registry unfortunately reveals too many results to be conclusive. Heinsohn, or whomever applied the field repaint, pressed their fingerprint into the helmet's paint just to the right of the rear split pin. The helmet's split pins are somewhat bent, and its washers are missing - a common occurrence on reissued helmets. That said, the split pins do not appear to have been altered recently, and were likely removed, then reinstalled during the helmet's field repainting.
Provenance
In July of 2025, Gustafson's acquired the inventory of Circa1941. This piece was among those acquisitions.
Condition Report
This helmet is in fair, well used condition. The leather liner exhibits dry rot, and its drawstring and chinstrap are missing.
