Description

This original WWII German M40 single "decal" Kriegsmarine helmet has an exceptional camouflage paint scheme. It was painted inside and out, first in a whitewash, then followed by a battleship-grey camouflage finish, covering its factory-applied decal in the process. Unlike the Heer, Luftwaffe, and Waffen-SS, the Kriegsmarine was not issued replacement decals. Instead, the veteran intricately hand painted the insignia of the Kriegsmarine in its place. The helmet is twice penciled with a surname of Dutch origin, "Voorhees". Perhaps this helmet was used by a Dutch volunteer in a coastal artillery position in the Netherlands. The inside brim is size stamped "EF64", along with the apparent lot number of "23296", denoting production by the Emaillierwerke A.G., Fulda factory. The interior retains its original size 56 leather liner, drawstring, and chinstrap. The chinstrap exhibits an aluminum buckle. The helmet's split pins and washers are all original and show no signs of tampering.

Provenance

In July of 2025, Gustafson's acquired the inventory of Circa1941. This piece was among those acquisitions.
