Description
This is an original WWII German private purchase dienstuhr (service watch) pocket watch. It was manufactured by Glycine, a Swiss watchmaker founded in 1914 in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. It exhibits the iconic black dial, sub-seconds, and luminescent radium painted indicators and hands. The caseback's interior is marked with the serial number of "399". Its original mechanical movement is the Glycine caliber F283. Its case diameter (excluding crown) measures approximately 50 mm.
Radium Disclosure
Timepieces from the 1930s and 40s often exhibited dials painted with a luminescent substance known as radium. Radium is radioactive and is known to cause cancer. Prior to purchasing, collectors should familiarize themselves with the potential health risks associated with collecting vintage timepieces. This particular watch has been tested with a GMC-300S Geiger Counter, showing a result of 0.85 µSv/h.
Provenance
In July of 2025, Gustafson's acquired the inventory of Circa1941. This piece was among those acquisitions.
Condition Report
This watch is in fair, used condition. Although its hour and minute hands can be set and no parts appear to be missing, it doesn't wind. It will require a complete servicing to function.
