Description
This is an original WWII German Kriegsverdienstkreuz mit Schwertern, or War Merit Cross with Swords. These were first introduced by Adolf Hitler in October 1939 to be awarded to military personnel for exceptional service to the Reich that was not directly related to combat. This particular example is a First Class variant in silvered tombak (zinc alloy). Its pin is marked with a Leistungsgemeinschaft Deutscher Ordenshersteller (LDO) number of "L/10", denoting production by Deschler & Sohn of Munich, Germany.
Provenance
Private Collection, Marysville, Washington
Condition Report
This piece is in good, used condition. The silvered finish is heavily worn and patinated. Both the pin and catch are intact and functional; however, they look to have potentially been repaired at some point.
