Description
These whistles were often secured to the collars of the airman's A-2 leather flight jacket to signal rescue craft or passing ships if shot down over water. This particular example is the "Thunderer" model and is also marked "MADE IN U.S.A." It does not appear to have a manufacturer's marking; however, its grooved top cap indicates it was manufactured before war's end. It appears to be constructed of brass-plated steel, with remnants of gold plating over that.
Provenance
Private Collection, Round Top, Texas
Condition Report
This whistle is in good condition, with some patina and finish loss. It retains its original cork pea; however, its key ring is missing.
