Description
This original WWII U.S. M-1 helmet liner was reissued for continued service during the Korean War. It is identified to Thomas Y. Southerland, 53252762. View the Veteran's Information section for more details regarding Southerland's life and military service. This helmet liner was produced by Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It features blackened brass A-washers and an OD#3 (khaki) suspension, approximately dating the liner's production from mid-1944 to 1945. It comes complete with its original Korean War era headband and neckband. Painted on the visor's interior is Southerland's full name and Army Service Number (ASN), while the sides are twice stamped with his laundry number, "S-2762". Atop the liner's original olive drab field repaint is an original 2nd Infantry Division decal, opposite the remnants of a regimental decal.

This helmet liner is in good, well used condition. The liner's suspension is beginning to tear throughout but generally remains intact.
Veteran's Information
Thomas Yates Southerland was born on April 1, 1934, in McMinn County, Tennessee. Coincidentally, on his birthday in 1952, Yates registered for the draft and subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Army. He survived the war and died on February 2, 1993, at the age of 58. He is buried at Fort Hill Cemetery in Cleveland, Tennessee. Made available to the new owner below are Southerland's draft registration cards from the National Archives and his gravesite.
