This original WWII U.S. Army M4 gas mask bag is identified to Clayton J. Zimmerman, 38422675. View the Veteran's Information section for more details regarding Zimmerman's life and military service. Next to Zimmerman's ID, the bag is marked "M4AIFT1209-1". These bags were designed to be worn at the wearer's waist. When the wearer came into contact with chemical weapons, he could open the canvas bag and retrieve the mask, which was connected to a metal box filter via a rubber hose, both of which are unfortunately missing.

Clayton J. Zimmerman was born in Texas in 1924. On May 11, 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in Houston, Texas. During the war, he served in the Quartermaster Corps. He was hospitalized in September 1945 with a hepatitis diagnosis and was discharged in October 1945. Made available to the new owner below are Zimmerman's enlistment records from the National Archives.
