Description
This original WWII U.S. Berkeley "Windproof" lighter was produced by the Flashlight Company of America in Jersey City, New Jersey. If you're familiar with Henry-Paul Enjames' GI Collector's Guide: U.S. Army European Theater of Operations, you may have seen this particular type of lighter featured on the cover. Due to wartime scarcity, Berkeley, along with others like Zippo and Matawan, produced lighters with black crackle finishes (as opposed to pre-war nickel and polished brass).
Provenance
Private Collection, Newark, Delaware
Condition Report
This lighter is in excellent condition, with all of its original black painted crackle textured finish intact. It comes with its original instructions and cardstock box. Unfortunately, the box has a torn, but still present flap. A piece of red tape is covering the "O. P. A. RETAIL CEILING PRICE, $2.00 EACH" marking. The instructions exhibit a tear that has also been taped over. This lighter will require a flint and fluid to function.
