Description
This original WWII U.S. M-1 helmet liner was produced by Hawley Products Company of St. Charles, Illinois. This liner appears to have been issued to at least two different soldiers. The exterior is stamped four times with the laundry number of "W-4994" (two of which were subsequently crossed out), while the interior is marked with an apparent "E-2_39". A search of the National Archives unfortunately reveals too many results to be conclusive. It features non-painted steel A-washers, an OD#3 (khaki) suspension with folded ends on the neck support, and studs for the removable leather chinstrap. These three features approximately date the liner's production to late-1942. The suspension has recently been completed with an original headband and American Stay Co. size medium neckband.
