Description
This is an original WWII U.S. M-1 helmet liner. It was produced by Inland Manufacturing Division, a subsidiary of General Motors Company located in Dayton, Ohio. Stenciled atop the exterior's original olive drab factory finish is the original owner's laundry number, an apparent "J-4815". A search of the National Archives unfortunately reveals too many results to be conclusive. It features anodized steel A-washers and an OD#3 (khaki) suspension, approximately dating the liner's production from late-1942 to mid-1943. It comes complete with its original headband and a recently installed Vogt Manufacturing Co. size medium neckband. Interestingly, the original owner substituted a section of GI shoelace to replace his damaged or missing leather chinstrap.
Provenance
Private Collection, Amston, Connecticut
Condition Report
This helmet liner is in fair, well used condition. The suspension is torn throughout, and the headband's leather has dried with use.
