Description
This original and rather uncommon WWII U.S. M-1 helmet liner is identified to Abraham Cohen, 32203525. View the Veteran's Information section for more details regarding Cohen's life and military service. It was produced by Inland Manufacturing Division, a subsidiary of General Motors Company located in Dayton, Ohio. It features non-painted steel A-washers secured by the early variation small-head rivets and a first pattern rayon suspension, approximately dating the liner's production to mid-1942. The suspension is marked with Cohen's initials "A.C." and comes complete with its original rayon headband, neckband, and stationary leather chinstrap. The headband is also marked with Cohen's full name and twice with the last four digits of his serial number. The exterior retains its original olive drab factory finish. Beneath the insignia eyelet hole is a small light green disk, however this appears to be the result of oxidation rather than a unit insignia, as a similar effect, to a lesser degree, is visible surrounding some of the other rivet heads.
Provenance
Private Collection, Lindstrom, Minnesota
Condition Report
This helmet liner is in good, complete condition; however, its internal components have deteriorated somewhat with age and its steel A-washers have rusted. The rarely intact leather chinstrap is still present but fragile and care should be expressed while handling it.
Veteran's Information
Abraham Cohen was born in 1915, in New York. On January 20, 1942, Cohen enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Cohen appears to have had some misfortune during his service and was hospitalized on four separate occasions: first, with an appendicitis diagnosis in November 1944, then with a bone fracture that same month, followed by a second fracture in July 1945, and lastly a chalazion diagnosis in October 1945. Made available to the new owner below are Cohen's enlistment records from the National Archives. At Gustafson's request, the National Archives is currently processing Cohen's complete file, which will be made available below when completed.
