Description
This is an original matching set of WWII U.S. M-1 helmet chinstraps, consisting of brass hardware and OD#3 (khaki) webbing. The buckle is the flat version. Interestingly, a rumor started circulating among soldiers that the blast of a nearby explosion could snap the wearer’s neck if their helmet’s chinstraps were secured under their chin. This set's original owner heeded these warnings and modified his chinstraps by installing the J-hook lower on the strap to extend its length, allowing the chinstraps to be fastened at the rear of the helmet. This set was recovered from a late-war McCord Radiator & Manufacturing Co. swivel loop helmet but would have also been seen on earlier fixed loop examples by both McCord and Schlueter Manufacturing Co.
Provenance
Private Collection, Rochester, New York
Condition Report
These chinstraps haven't been cut, only their stitching has been undone, meaning these are still their original length.
