Description
This original and exceedingly rare WWII U.S. M-1 helmet liner headband was produced by George R. Carter Co. This particular manufacturer only produced a single contract (W199-QM-25904), awarded on June 1, 1942. With only a couple examples surfacing in the past several years, George R. Carter Co. is undoubtedly one of the least encountered manufacturers of headbands, making this a must-have for the discerning helmet collector. It features a blue ink manufacturer's marking, the double wire buckle variation, second pattern spring clips, and triple-weave herringbone twill (HBT) - four hallmarks of this particular contract. This would be an ideal headband for all helmet liners with non-painted steel A-washers (including Hawleys and low-pressure liners).
Provenance
In July of 2025, Gustafson's acquired the inventory of Circa1941. This piece was among those acquisitions.
Condition Report
This headband is in good, used condition. The leather remains quite soft and pliable, and the manufacturer's marking is still legible.
