Description
This is an original WWII U.S. M-1 helmet liner leather chinstrap. It features a green painted steel buckle and unmarked rivets, approximately dating its production from mid-1943 to mid-1944. There appears to be a supplier's marking in black ink on the leather's underside; however, it is illegible. This would be an ideal chinstrap for a high-pressure helmet liner with either green painted steel or blackened brass A-washers.
Provenance
Private Collection, Tulare, California
Condition Report
This chinstrap is in fair, well used condition. The leather exhibits some surface cracking throughout, one section of the strap has become stiff, while another exhibits a small tear halfway through. This chinstrap should only be displayed resting on a liner's suspension (as opposed to stretched over a helmet's visor).
