Description
This original WWII U.S. M-1 helmet liner neckband was sourced from a wartime liner; however, upon removing the neckband from the liner's suspension we discovered the "VE" marking of Vogt Manufacturing Corp. This marking is often seen on rayon headbands, but not rayon neckbands, which leads us to the conclusion that the serviceman cut a portion from a headband to use as a field improvised neckband. On its reverse is the imprint of a liner's A-washer which would not have been in contact with the material if it spent its service as a headband, further pointing to its wartime modification. It measures approximately 4 3/4 inches long and is comparable to a size large. It exhibits nickel-plated brass United Carr snaps. This would be an ideal neckband for not just liners with rayon suspensions, but also transitional Inlands and St. Clairs.
Provenance
Private Collection, Oakfield, Wisconsin
Condition Report
This neckband is in good, used condition. The fabric is strong, and all four snaps are intact; however, two show signs of verdigris.
