Description
This is an original WWII U.S. M1942 canteen and cup. Following the unsuccessful trial of porcelain enamel M1942 canteens, the War Production Board authorized the return to using aluminum, as well as corrosion-resisting ("stainless") steel (CRS). This canteen was manufactured in 1944 by Strong Manufacturing Co. of Sebring, Ohio, and is constructed of CRS. Its black bakelite cap is marked inside with a small, stylized "S" and mold number of "55", denoting production by Standard Cap & Molding Co. of Baltimore, Maryland. The rust on the cup's steel handle has unfortunately concealed its date and manufacturer's marking; however, the two pieces were discovered together.
Provenance
Personal Collection of Chelius Carter
Condition Report
