Description

This original WWII U.S. M-1 helmet set showcases an original, and rather subtle brown field repaint, often attributed to the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. The front seam fixed loop helmet shell was manufactured by McCord Radiator & Manufacturing Co. of Detroit, Michigan. The lot number is concealed beneath the interior's field repaint; however, judging by the later style fixed loops, it likely dates from mid-1942 to late-1943. In addition to the original field repaint, the helmet retains its original cork texture and OD#3 (khaki) chinstraps with brass hardware. Interestingly, a rumor started circulating among soldiers that the blast of a nearby explosion could snap the wearer’s neck if their helmet’s chinstraps were secured under their chin. This helmet's original owner heeded these warnings and modified his chinstraps by cutting through just enough of the shorter side’s stitching to extend the length of the strap, allowing it to be fastened around the helmet's brim. The helmet's liner was produced by Inland Manufacturing Division, a subsidiary of General Motors Company located in Dayton, Ohio. It features non-painted steel A-washers and an OD#3 suspension, approximately dating the liner's production from late-1942 to mid-1943. The suspension comes complete with its original headband and neckband. Like the steel shell, the helmet liner is painted with the same brown field repaint, showcasing their long history together as a set.
