Description
This is an original WWII U.S. front seam swivel loop M-1 helmet shell. Its interior is marked with the original owner's laundry number and surname, "J-7039" and "Jarboe", respectively. A search of the National Archives unfortunately did not reveal a match. This helmet was produced by McCord Radiator & Manufacturing Co. of Detroit, Michigan and exhibits a lot number of "1049B", approximately dating its production to late-1944. It retains its original olive drab factory finish, cork texture, and single OD#3 (khaki) chinstrap with brass hardware and a raised bar buckle. "54" is painted at the rear of the helmet. Unfortunately, its significance is unknown to us.
Provenance
Private Collection, Santa Rosa Beach, Florida
Condition Report
This helmet shell is in good, used condition. One of its chinstrap loops is damaged, resulting in the loss of the corresponding chinstrap.
