Description
This is an original and quite uncommon WWII U.S. M-2 "D-bail" paratrooper helmet liner. It was produced by Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Unique among the majority of Westinghouse paratrooper liners available on the market today, it features the earlier green painted steel A-washers, OD#3 (khaki) suspension, and factory-installed OD#7 (green) A-yokes with the large, cast buckles. These features, in combination with the brass sockets that accommodate the corresponding snaps on a paratrooper helmet shell's chinstrap, approximately date the liner's production from late-1943 to mid-1944. The suspension comes complete with its original Goldsmith Bros. Manufacturing Co. headband, neckband and 5-hole web chincup. The headband is marked with the initials "GMJ", while the neckband is marked with the surname "KOHT". Interestingly, we discovered just one Koht in the National Archives, Kenneth W. Koht Jr., 19141473; however, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Given these details and the noncongruent initials, it is likely the neckband was added at a later date. The liner's exterior retains its original olive drab factory finish. This liner will display quite nicely when paired with an M-2 "D-bail" helmet, or perhaps a more common wartime configuration, a standard M-1 helmet with fixed loops.
