Description
This is an original WWII U.S. Army Air Force enlisted man's service cap. Its original owner removed the cap's interior wire stiffener, allowing the hat to be reshaped and "crushed" into a silhouette more popular among American airmen. It is constructed of "chocolate" gabardine wool and features a patent brown leather chinstrap and "crushable" visor. The front is decorated with a brass enlisted man's device. Its interior is marked size 7; however, no manufacturer's marking could be located.
Provenance
Private Collection, Dallas, Texas
Condition Report
This cap is in good, used condition. Unfortunately, however, the "E-Z Cushion" marked headband's stitching has come undone by the wearer's forehead, the plastic headliner is cracking, and the wool exhibits some moth holes.
