Description
This original WWII U.S. Army Air Force officer's crusher cap was manufactured by Dobbs Fifth Avenue of New York, New York. It is identified to Lieutenant Roy J. "Stanley" Szczepaniak. View the Veteran's Information section for more details regarding Lt. Szczepaniak's life and military service. This cap is constructed of a summer weight khaki material and features a russet brown leather chinstrap and "crushable" single-ply visor. When first acquired, this cap was missing its device; we have since completed it with an original gold-plated brass standard sized officer's device by AMCRAFT of Attleboro, Massachusetts, which are commonly found on Dobbs crusher caps. Beneath the headband is a size tag of 6 7/8. Inscribed inside the cap's headliner is Lt. Sczepaniak's taken surname, "Stanley". His draft registration cards (below) document his name change, but he continued to go by both "Szczepaniak" and "Stanley" throughout his life. The last image shows Lt. Szczepaniak in a studio setting wearing his gabardine wool crusher cap.
Provenance
Private Collection, Gilberts, Illinois
Condition Report
This cap is in fair, used condition. Unfortunately, the stitching has come undone on the headband by the wearer's forehead and the cover has somewhat separated from the band. The khaki material exhibits minimal mothing; however, the coating on the leather visor is crazing.
