Description
This is an original WWII U.S. Army Air Force Type A-4 flying suit from the 42-16068-P contract. The A-4 was actually a pre-war design, standardized in 1930, and remained the most prevalent USAAF flying suit until early-1943 when it was replaced by the AN-6550 and AN-S-31. This example is constructed of olive drab gabardine wool material. Stitched to the suit's chest is its original owner's leather name tag. Unfortunately, it has deteriorated to the point of illegibility. This flying suit is a size 38 but please refer to the Measurements section for more details.
Provenance
Personal Collection of Chelius Carter
Condition Report
This flying suit is in fair, well used condition. It exhibits several repairs, but all appear to be wartime done. The male portion of the snap closure on the wearer's left leg has pulled away; however, the original CONMAR zippers remain intact and functional.
