Description
This is an original and rather uncommon WWII U.S. Army Air Forces Type B-5 winter flying helmet. These were first developed in 1933 for the U.S. Army Air Corps, Material Division at Wright Field of Riverside, Ohio. This particular example shows wartime modifications in order to accommodate the airman's oxygen mask and headset receivers. Stitched to the interior's shearling lining is a tag which reads "TYPE B-5, WINTER FLYING, LARGE". Apart from the white painted USAAF emblem, no other markings were discovered.
Provenance
Personal Collection of Chelius Carter
Condition Report
This flying helmet is in fair, used condition. The leather chinstrap is still intact, and the shearling remains somewhat pliable, however there are consistent signs of wear throughout.
