Description
This is an original WWII USN M-1 helmet set. Although its shell and liner were found separately from one another, they match each other nearly perfectly, with both pieces showcasing an original battleship-blue repaint with evidence of a prior application of yellow. The front seam fixed loop helmet shell was manufactured by McCord Radiator & Manufacturing Co. of Detroit, Michigan. The lot number is concealed beneath the interior's repaint; however, judging by the helmet's later style fixed loops in combination with the earlier cast-brass chinstrap buckle, carried over from the M1917A1 helmet (a common characteristic of helmets with 200-range lot numbers), we can conclude it approximately dates to mid-1942. The helmet's liner was produced by Mine Safety Appliances Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It features blackened brass A-washers and an OD#3 (khaki) suspension, approximately dating the liner's production from mid-1944 to 1945. The suspension comes complete with its original headband and neckband.
Provenance
In July of 2025, Gustafson's acquired the inventory of Circa1941. This piece was among those acquisitions.
Condition Report
This helmet set is in good, well used condition. The helmet shell's paint is worn thin, its OD#3 chinstraps are frayed, and a couple of the snaps on the liner's neckband are pulling away from the fabric.
